Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the most common and dependable medical therapies used around the world. It is the oldest continuously practiced medical system in the world, used by nearly one third of the planet’s people as a primary health care system or as a supplemental therapy. It is by nature simple, safe and accessible health care. Acupuncture can be a powerfully effective and naturally relaxing form of medicine.

How does acupuncture work?

Very thin, solid, hairlike needles are inserted at specific points on the body. The stimulation of these acupuncture points affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It stimulates the release of chemicals such as endorphins which help with pain and stress.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Usually not much at all. Most people are deeply relaxed and/or asleep once all points are placed.

Do you reuse the needles?

No. We use disposable needles. They come in sterilized packages, we use them once, then we dispose of them in an approved container.

What kind of training does an acupuncturist have?

All of our acupuncturists have a Master’s degree in acupuncture and are licensed to practice acupuncture by the State of Utah.

Do you take insurance?

We do not accept insurance coverage, but would be happy to offer a receipt for your visit so you may submit it directly. Do keep in mind the cost of an acupuncture treatment here at SLC Qi can be less than a typical insurance co-pay.

What should I tell my acupuncturist?

The acupuncturist will ask you about your main complaint, but also of any secondary complaints. It is common to treat more than one issue at a time. A common phrase you may hear from your acupuncturist is "tell me about your top 3 complaints for today".

Why did you put that needle there?

This is a common question that has no short answer. Many factors determine what points are used, and when they are used. All acupuncturists will spend years of their lives pondering this question, and there have been many books written on the topic. Our favorite is a great book by the title of "Why Did You Put That Needle There?" written by Andy Wegman. You can listen to him read his book, download it for free, or buy a copy from Amazon. We also have copies for sale in our clinics.

What do the acupuncturists specialize in?

All of our acupuncturists are general care practitioners, which means they are typically busy treating all sorts of folks for all sorts of ailments. We believe that acupuncture is helpful for most problems based on patients being able to get enough treatments, not on being able to see an acupuncturist with a particular area of interest. This clinic has been open since 2010, and has treated thousands of patients over the years, so we have experience treating lots of different conditions.

Do you treat pregnant women?

Yes. We get lots of referrals from midwives and obstetricians because acupuncture is effective for many pregnancy-related conditions.

Do you treat children?

Yes. As long as they have an open mind and are willing to try it. We do not always have to use needles during therapy, and some very young patients may get only acupressure.

How will I feel after a treatment?

In general, you can expect to feel relaxed for several hours following an acupuncture treatment. Reactions specific to particular injuries or health concerns should be addressed by the acupuncturist on an individual basis.

How often should I come in?

This can depend a lot on your general health and the condition being treated. The more severe or chronic an issue is, the more treatments may be necessary. Typically, the more you need it, the more you can come in. As things improve, the sessions taper down. It is not uncommon for more severe cases to come in 2 or 3 times in one week, and for milder cases to come in periodically. Some health issues respond more quickly while others take longer, and some people just get better faster than others for no particular reason. The acupuncturist will advise you of the ideal course of treatment.

Can I combine acupuncture with massage/chiropractic/medication /exercise/etc?

Yes. You can combine acupuncture with almost anything. Nothing is going to make it less effective, and it doesn't interfere with anything else. We do ask that you let us know of any medications you are taking, so we can get a full picture to best plan your treatment.
